I am glad to be joined by Theodore Allison, Assistant to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Mr. Allison and I serve as members of the Advanced Counterfeit Deterrence Steering Committee, which is an interagency committee composed of officials from the Treasury Department, Secret Service, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and the Federal Reserve. The Steering Committee was established in 1982 to coordinate the counterfeit deterrent activities of the various government agencies. As way of background, I'd like to review the history of higher denomination notes in this country and make some observations about the use of the $100 note. Then I will turn to some important law enforcement considerations that would be raised by any proposal to reissue higher denomination U.S. currency.
