I must confess I had mostly lost track of Lewis H. Lapham after his time at Harper's Bazaar ended in the mid-2000s. In my humble view, he was one of the greatest editors I have ever encountered both as a avid consumer of media and a professional in the field of communications. The scion of a shipping and banking family, he was a nationally respected journalist known for his sharp commentaries on politics, wars, and the wealthy. Starting in 1971, he initially served as the managing editor of Harper’s and later took on the role of its editor in chief, until 2006. He passed away last week in Rome, of all places. He had been a longtime resident of Manhattan’s Upper East Side, a place probably more easily associated with his patrician background than the progressive perspective that we have come to enjoy through the pages of Harper's and, more recently, his own Lapham's Quarterly. #media #journalism #views #perspectives #harpers #uppereastside #NYC #RIPLewisHLapham

During my tenure at MSC Group, we worked closely with amongst others to better understand the the relevant market, define the positioning and shape the product offering of Explora Journeys, the Group's luxury cruise brand that launched last year. This experience deepened my interest for luxury and hospitality, sparking ongoing interest in these sectors.McKinsey's recent report on luxury travelers underscores pivotal shifts in this highly attractive segment of the travel and hospitality market, driven by evolving preferences and emerging trends -- all of which are relevant for us in communications. These are, briefly, some of the highlights from their report:- **Diverse Demographics:** Affluent millennials and Gen Z now form a substantial part of the luxury travel market, valuing experiences over possessions and seeking personalized, value-aligned experiences.- **Sustainability and Wellness:** Luxury travelers prioritize eco-friendly options and experiences promoting physical and mental well-being.- **Digital Integration:** Personalized services and seamless online booking platforms are key, reflecting the demand for high digital sophistication.- **Emerging Destinations:** Exclusive, less crowded locales offering unique cultural and natural experiences are gaining traction, presenting opportunities for bespoke experiences. These insights stress the need for continuous innovation and adaptation in the travel and hospitality sector to meet the evolving needs of luxury travelers. Needless to say, effective client and travel advisor engagement around these trends, including through communications, is paramount. For more details, you can access the full McKinsey report for in-depth insights at the link below.#luxury #hospitality #travel #travelandleisure #brandpositioning #productexperience #engagement #luxurytravellers #communications #experience #innovation #adaptation #publicrelations #PR #brandmarketing #relevance #luxuryhospitality #experiences #storytelling #understandyouraudience #targetmarket #tourism #sustainability #wellness #digitalintegration #demographics

I am no political communicator, but I do know a thing or two about managing issues and, specifically, reputation on behalf of high-visibility individuals and executives. Over the past couple of weeks, it has been fascinating to observe what U.S. President Biden’s team has been doing to attempt to get him out of his current funk since the now infamous CNN presidential debate. Their approach has included deploying long-used tactics, which, while intended to protect “your man,” in the end, do more damage than protect him -- for example, planting questions with media as outlined in the The New York Times article below. A more nuanced approach would be beneficial, designed around "your man" and his actual strengths -- as opposed to, around his weaknesses. A more nuanced approach tailored to Biden's actual strengths would be far more effective. Despite the ongoing debate about his age, President Biden is a well-articulated politician with a deep understanding of global issues and international politics. This brings us to another crucial point: Is his staff overmanaging his speaking opportunities? This is another common mistake in these situations, and it might be causing the very blunders they aim to prevent. Biden could be so preoccupied with avoiding missteps that he's missing opportunities to speak to his many other strengths. A shift in strategy that emphasizes what he should say, rather than what he shouldn't (or he should be careful about), could make all the difference.#PublicRelations #ReputationManagement #Reputation #Media #ExecutivePositioning #PoliticalCommunications #CommunicationStrategy #Positioning #Visibility #PR #Politics #GlobalIssues #IssuesManagement #CorporateAffairs

A bit of a lesson in leadership here as today’s Financial Times looks at how England’s Gareth Southgate has managed to turn things around for the team since he took over in 2016. And on the sort of focus and tools that are needed when you want to drive impactful outcomes - whether for a football team or a function within a business. #leadership
