Registering to vote in North Carolina: Do you qualify?
YEAR’S GAMES. FIRST, AT NOON GREENSBORO POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A SHOOTING THAT LEFT ONE PERSON HURT. OFFICERS FOUND THEM AT THE MARRIOTT DOWNTOWN ON NORTH GREENE STREET AROUND 615 SUNDAY MORNING. THEY WERE RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL WITH LIFE THREATENING INJURIES, AND SO FAR, NO INFORMATION ON A SUSPECT OR A MOTIVE HAS BEEN RELEASED. WINSTON-SALEM POLICE ARE WORKING SEVERAL CRIME SCENES RIGHT NOW IN AN EFFORT TO FIND THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR SHOOTING TWO PEOPLE. OFFICERS WERE CALLED TO AN APARTMENT COMPLEX ON PECAN AVENUE JUST BEFORE 4430 SATURDAY AFTERNOON. THAT’S JUST OFF UNION CROSS ROAD AND I-40. TWO PEOPLE WERE TAKEN TO AN URGENT CARE IN KERNERSVILLE WITH GUNSHOT WOUNDS BEFORE BEING TRANSFERRED TO ATRIUM HEALTH. WAKE FOREST BAPTIST MEDICAL CENTER. WE ARE TOLD THEIR INJURIES ARE NOT LIFE THREATENING, BUT INVESTIGATORS BELIEVE THE TWO WERE TARGETED. INVESTIGATORS SAY THE POSSIBLE SUSPECTS LEFT THE SCENE IN A WHITE DODGE CHARGER. OFFICERS FOUND THAT CAR ABANDONED AND ON FIRE AT THE INTERSECTION OF BLUESTONE AND FOSTERDALE LANES. POLICE ARRESTED A PERSON FOR GRABBING A STUDENT AT WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY. ACCORDING TO WAKE ALERT, UNIVERSITY POLICE RESPONDED TO THE Z. SMITH REYNOLDS LIBRARY ON SUNDAY WHEN A MAN NOT AFFILIATED WITH THE SCHOOL GRABBED A STUDENT’S ANKLE UNDER A TABLE. OFFICERS ARRESTED THE MAN AND SENT HIM TO THE FORSYTH COUNTY DETENTION CENTER. AND IN GUILFORD COUNTY, A FORMER CHARTER SCHOOL TEACHER ACCUSED OF SEX CRIMES WILL FACE A JUDGE THIS WEEK. 40 YEAR OLD MICHAEL DAVID EVANS IS CHARGED WITH FELONY SECRET PEEPING AND INDECENT LIBERTIES WITH A STUDENT. WE’RE TOLD HE USED TO TEACH AT SUMMERFIELD CHARTER ACADEMY AND IS CURRENTLY BEING HELD UNDER A $200,000 SECURED BOND. EVANS IS SET TO APPEAR IN COURT TOMORROW. A LOCAL THEATER IS ROLLING OUT A NEW POLICY RED CINEMAS ON BATTLEGROUND AVENUE IN GREENSBORO IS PUTTING A CURFEW IN PLACE FOR MINORS. MOVIEGOERS UNDER 18 MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT IF THEY ARE ATTENDING A SHOWING AFTER 8 P.M. ON THURSDAYS, FRIDAYS OR SATURDAYS. THE THEATER SAYS. THIS IS SO THAT GUESTS CAN HAVE AND STATE OF ADDICTION.PERIENCE- SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL RECOVERY MONTH, INCREASING AWARENESS SURROUNDING MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTION. A GREENSBORO FATHER IS SHARING THE STORY OF HIS DAUGHTER, WHO HE LOST TO A DRUG OVERDOSE. AS WXII 12 KELLY KENDALL REPORTS, HE IS NOW FIGHTING TO HELP SAVE THE LIVES OF OTHERS. SHE WAS JUST A PERSON FILLED WITH LOVE FOR FOR EVERYONE AROUND HER. RANDY ABBOTT SAYS VANESSA WAS SO KIND SHE WOULDN’T EVEN HURT THE SMALLEST OF CREATURES. HE SAYS THAT KINDNESS IS PART OF WHY SHE TURNED TO SUBSTANCES. SHE REALLY HAD A HARD TIME WHEN SHE DIDN’T FEEL LIKE PEOPLE WERE LOVING HER BACK. SHE HAD A HARD TIME WITH, YOU KNOW, THE EVILS THAT GO ON IN IN THE WORLD. AS A TEENAGER, VANESSA STRUGGLED WITH DEPRESSION, BUT ABBOTT SAYS HE DIDN’T KNOW HOW BAD THINGS HAD GOTTEN UNTIL HER FIRST HEROIN OVERDOSE IN 2012. THE FIRST WORDS OUT OF THE DOCTOR’S MOUTH TO MY WIFE AND I WERE, WE GOT HER BACK. I WAS LIKE, WAIT, WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU GOT HER BACK? ABBOTT TRIED TO HELP VANESSA FIND TREATMENT AND SOMETIMES SHE WOULD GET BETTER. BUT ONE NIGHT IN 2015, SHE WENT OUT WITH FRIENDS AND DIDN’T RETURN THE NEXT DAY. ABBOTT FOUND OUT SHE DIED FROM A HEROIN OVERDOSE. I TALK ABOUT GOING NUMB. AND YOU DO? YOUR BODY GOES INTO THIS NUMBNESS THAT YOU JUST DON’T EVEN KNOW. WHEN I GAVE MY DAUGHTER’S EULOGY, MY DAUGHTER AND I BOTH GAVE EULOGIES. WHEN I GAVE THE ONE I DID, I MADE A COMMITMENT THAT DAY THAT I WOULD GET INVOLVED. I WOULD DO WHATEVER I COULD TO FIGHT THIS THING FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. AND THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT HE’S DONE. HE WORKS WITH SEVERAL ORGANIZATIONS TO HELP PEOPLE FIND TREATMENT, EXPAND GOOD SAMARITAN LAWS, AND RAISE AWARENESS. HE WANTS NO ONE TO GO THROUGH WHAT HE DID. THE PEOPLE THAT ARE DYING, THEY ARE SOMEONE’S SOMEONE CHILD, FATHER, MOTHER. THERE ARE PEOPLE JUST LIKE YOU AND ME. THAT WAS KELLY KENDALL REPORTING. ABBOTT HELPED ORGANIZE A REMEMBRANCE EVENT IN RALEIGH FOR INTERNATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY, AND HE HOPES PEOPLE WILL GET INVOLVED TO HELP REDUCE THE STIGMA AND EXPAND TREATMENT. AND YOU MAY NOTICE MORE OFFICERS ON THE ROADS. NORTH CAROLINA HAS A BOOZE IT AND LOSE IT CAMPAIGN UNDERWAY. THERE WILL BE AN INCREASE IN OFFICERS ON THE ROADS ACROSS 100 COUNTIES, THROUGH SEPTEMBER 8TH. AUTHORITIES SAY THE LABOR DAY HOLIDAY WEEKEND REMAINS ONE OF THE DEADLIES

In order to register to vote in North Carolina, you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Live in the county from which you are registering and have lived there for at least 30 days
- Be at least 18 years old
- Not be serving a felony sentence, including probation, post-release supervision or parole
