RNC rental rush: Homes listed for thousands of dollars
Properties are listed on rental sites like Airbnb for as much as $10,000 a night RNC week.
There's less than a month until the Republican National Convention kicks off in Milwaukee. Around 50,000 people are expected to visit the city, and they'll all need somewhere to stay. Adam Reek manages about a dozen rental properties in Milwaukee. "We manage Stay MKE, and we design and furnish homes from scratch. We also take over existing listings, but we are a full-service, short-term vacation rental management company here," Reek said.He takes care of properties like one on Kenilworth on the east side that's listed for rent during the RNC. "The rates for this house will probably settle somewhere in the $1,500 dollar a night range, which is about three times the norm for a normal weekend," Reek said. Full-time renters like Reek, and now homeowners are getting in on an RNC rental rush. "My friends think I'm crazy. But, you know, I hear that the hotels are already full," Gretchen Seamons said.Seamons listed her Whitefish Bay home on Airbnb for $3,500 a night. "I heard other people doing it, and I thought it might be a good idea to earn a little bit of money during the summer," Seamons said. She said she did her research before listing the property. "I looked around quite a bit to see what other houses were renting for. We can host eight people, more if they're smaller people. And I thought that our price was pretty competitive. A little bit lower than some of the houses in Whitefish Bay and Shorewood," Seamons said.WISN 12 News reporter Kendall Keys asked how the price compared to a typical weekend. "It's about ten times the price. It's a lot more. You know, good old capitalism, that's how it works. A little bit of competition, a little bit of scarcity. But we thought it was just right about right," Seamons said. It seems every corner of the metro area is trying to get in on the act. Like, this four-bed charmer in Wauwatosa listed on Airbnb for $1,500 a night. And a five-bed in New Berlin listed on Vrbo for $2,500 a night.For those looking to be closer to the action, there's a property listed on Vrbo just across the Milwaukee River from Fiserv Forum for $10,000 a night. "I think a lot of folks, us included, have had our prices really kind of elevated for months now in anticipation of this, you know, really unique event. It's probably going to fall a little bit short of where a lot of people's hopes were, but it's still going to be a great event," Reek said. There are nearly 700 Airbnb rentals still available during RNC week, with prices ranging from under $100 a night to $10,000.
